Arizona Western Baseball outscores Saints 31-0 in doubleheader sweep

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 12 ranked Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (24-6) completed the series sweep of Community Christian (6-8) sweeping a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 17-0 before taking the finale 14-0.

Nathan Houston went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in while scoring four runs in the Matadors' 17-0 win in five innings in the opener.

Arizona Western batted nine times in the first inning, scoring four runs before sending 13 batters to the plate in the plate in the second inning, erupting for eight runs on six hits. After being held off the board in the third inning, the Matadors got the bats going in again in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, and sending nine hitters to the plate.

Ismael Cordoba retired all nine batters he faced in order, tossing three shutout innings with five strikeouts before Brady Nelson finished the game off with two scoreless frames. Robert Miranda drove in three runs and doubled twice in the win.

Mac Robertson and Hugo Tafoya combined to throw a no-hitter in game two of the doubleheader in a 14-0 win for the Matadors in five innings.

Arizona Western scored five runs in the first inning with the benefit of just one hit and added two more runs in the second and another two in the third inning before putting the game away with a four-run fourth inning.

Robert Miranda went 1-for-1 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, and a double in the win while Carl Sullivan had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

The Matadors return to ACCAC play on Tuesday, March 19, heading to Phoenix to take on Phoenix College in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
