Miranda, Watson guide Arizona Western Baseball to sweep of Cochise

YUMA, Ariz. – The No. 13 ranked Arizona Western College Matadors Baseball team (18-5, 8-4) extended its winning streak to three games with a doubleheader sweep of Cochise (15-9, 5-5) on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field, winning game one 6-3 before finishing off the sweep with a 9-4 win in game two.

Robert Miranda went 3-for-3 with a home run while Eli Watson drove in three of the Matadors' six runs in a 6-3 win in the opener of the doubleheader.

Ismael Cordoba allowed two earned runs in seven innings of work, striking out seven in the complete game win.

The Matadors trailed 2-0 in the third inning in game one before scoring three runs in the third inning, getting two runs on a Watson double and a third on a Sergio De Cello single.  The Matadors added a run on an error in the fourth and another on a Watson single before Miranda homered to left in the sixth inning to add the sixth run of the game.

Watson led the way in game two, going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in while Miranda hit his second home run of the day.

Brady Nelson threw four shutout innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the seventh inning, the Matadors scored a pair of runs to take the lead, grabbing the advantage on a past ball allowing Miranda to score and adding another run on an error. Arizona Western grabbed three runs in the eighth inning thanks to a Luca Hoerger RBI single, a wild pitch, and a balk.

Hoerger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Nathan Houston doubled and drove in a run, going 2-for-3 in the win.

The Matadors head on the road on Tuesday, March 5, to continue conference play with an ACCAC  doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert at Noon.
