Lady Matadors Softball gets swept by Pima to finish regular season

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors Softball team (27-21, 19-13) wrapped up the 2024 regular season with a home doubleheader with Pima (39-12, 26-6) on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 5-1 before losing game two 7-2 at Charlie Dine Softball Field.

Kaity McLaughlin tripled while Jayleen Espinoza drove in the only run for the Lady Matadors in game one of the doubleheader.

Pima opened the scoring in the second inning, scoring a pair of runs before adding two more in the fifth and another in the seventh.

The Lady Matadors put their first base runner on in the sixth inning on a Natalie Gonzalez single and scored their lone run in the seventh when McLaughlin tripled before coming around to score on an Espinoza groundout.

Espinoza had a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, driving in one of the Lady Matadors' two runs in a 7-2 loss in game two.

The Lady Matadors scored first in game two. McLaughlin singled and advanced to second on an error before coming home to score on a Espinoza single back into center field to give Arizona Western a 1-0 in the first inning.

Pima scored a run in the third inning to tie the game and plated three in the fifth to grab a  4-2 lead.
Arizona Western got a run back in the fifth inning when Lili Vigil German worked a bases-loaded walk to score Espinoza, cutting the Aztecs' lead to 4-2. Pima scored the final three runs of the game, adding those runs in the seventh inning to pull away.

The Lady Matadors open the Region I tournament on Friday afternoon in Thatcher, Ariz., on the campus of Eastern Arizona.
