Lady Matadors Softball drops pair of tight contests with Eastern Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Lady Matadors Softball team (27-19, 19-11) was swept in the penultimate home doubleheader of the 2024 season by Eastern Arizona (34-8, 29-3) on Tuesday afternoon, losing 5-2 in game one before falling 3-2 in the second game at Charlie Dine Softball Field.

Jessie Garcia went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk while Mackenzie Vela singled twice in the Lady Matadors' 5-2 loss to Eastern Arizona in game one.

The Gila Monsters scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Lady Matadors took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on an error and a GiGi Garcia single up the middle to put the Lady Matadors in front 2-1.

After tying the game with a run in the fourth inning, Eastern Arizona scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the 5-2 lead.

Kaity McLaughlin had three hits, going 3-for-4 and Valerie Joaquin went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 3-2 loss in game two.

Eastern Arizona scored two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead and added another run in the seventh.

The Lady Matadors broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning, getting their first run on a Mackenzie Barney fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-1. Joaquin grounded a single into center to score the second run of the inning. The would-be tying run was thrown out at the plate on a fly out to right field to end the game.

The Lady Matadors wrap up the season on Saturday, May 4, hosting Pima in an ACCAC doubleheader beginning at Noon at Charlie Dine Softball Field.
